Achieving effective medicines governance

Description

The purpose of these Guiding Principles for Drug and Therapeutics Committees (DTCs) is to provide guidance on the role, operation and evaluation of DTCs (or equivalent) associated with public hospitals. The principles provide a framework for DTCs to achieve effective medicines management governance within their organisation and promote national consistency.

These Guiding Principles will assist DTCs to meet the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards, particularly Standard 4: Medication Safety and also relevant aspects of Standard 1: Governance for Safety and Quality in Health Service Organisations and Standard 3: Preventing and Controlling Healthcare Associated Infections.

Use the checklist, based on the Guiding Principles to assess current DTC operations to identify the gaps in functions and/or areas for improvements.
